Chris O’Riley

Known lately for reworking Radiohead. He’ll be on CBC Radio One’s Q program on March 10th.
Normally would use a 50mm f/1.8 in the studio (no flashing allowed in Q, and it’s darrrrk), but decided to bump up the iso and use an 18-70 at 18mm, 1/30 at f/3.5 for a wide angle shot with some blurry hands. Focus and movement capture are both overrated in many cases. In Chris O’Riley’s case, he’s a very emotive pianist.

Lawrence Hill, author of The Book of Negroes

Lawrence Hill recently won CBC’s Canada Reads and his book is now the subject of the recently launched Book Club. I’ve yet to read the book but I hear it’s pretty awesome. I’m currently sludging through The Diamond Age by Neil Stephenson… not sure about it so far.
As with most CBC shoots, I didn’t have much time and the location (the comfy couches just outside of the Canada Reads offices) was spur of the moment as, while Lawrence is a very nice and accommodating guy, he also has a very busy schedule at the moment. The quick and dirty setup was an SB600 at a silver reflective umbrella at upper-camera-left, ungelled.I had time to shoot him at every angle, but I like this one the most for the narrow-side lighting and his casual pose. His coat caught the light in a nifty way as well, I think.
This shot is straight outta the camera. Nikon D90 18-70mm lens, iso400, f/7.1, ‘Standard’ color setting, ‘normal’ d-lighting. I usually shoot RAW/NEF but I had to have a quick turnaround time with this shoot. I hope he likes it!

Hannah Sung, host of CBC Book Club

Now that the cat is out of the bag, I can post some shots I took of Hannah Sung holding the winning Canada Reads 2009 book in the CBC image library. She’s totally awesome in person and great to work with.
Both these shots were done with two flashes: One in an umbrella behind me and ever so slightly to the camera’s right, the other on the top of the bookshelf behind Hannah bouncing off the ceiling. Both were gelled tungsten.
Visit the CBC Book Club and Canada Reads sites to learn more about the shebang, and also to see more shots I’ve taken for the portal (only a couple of shots of the Canada Reads panelists in the Q studio are ones I didn’t take). If you have any questions, ask away.
