Went to Montreal last week and we decided to hit the Rose Bowl for some good ol’ten-pin action. I had some gear with me and decided to take some pics. The idea was to make them look kinda hard core. Used two lights: An Sb600 1/1 tungsten gelled on camera left for their faces, and an Sb28 left ungelled casting the hard blue side/rear light cutting across their faces. The reason the light turned blue while left ungelled was because the camera white balance (wb) was set to tungsten. I find you get a much bluer blue if you do it that way instead of actually putting a blue gel on the light, which in my experience makes things subtler. It definitely has its place, though. Think I shot this at a low ISO to keep the ambient and background down.

The man in the shot is Stewart Goodyear. He was in recently for a future show on Radio 2, I believe. This was a last minute shoot, in that I found out about it 5 minutes before he was going to sit down. I had My D90, my f3.5/4.5 18mm-70mm lens, and two flashes (an SB600 and a no-name). I placed the SB600 to camera right, fired full power at 24mm directly into the white ceiling, about 8-10 feet away from Stewart. The no-name flash was behind Stewart, to camera left, on top of a shelf. It was also straight up to the sky. Here are the four files, the final ones being the ones on the left. Sonic Youth on Q

Thurston and Lee will be playing a stripped down 2 song set on Radio One’s Q, July 7, 2009, at 10am and 10pm. They’re using acoustic guitars, but trust me, some parts definitely do not sound acoustic. All in the name of fun, I say.
