Annie Clark, AKA St Vincent, on Q

August 13, 2009 | Filed Under photo

She’ll be on Radio One’s Q program tomorrow at 10am/10pm nation-wide. This shoot marks the first time I decided to use an off-camera strobe in the Q studio. An Sb600 about 15 feet away with a wide-angle dispersion so it would hit her directly and diffuse off the white-ish ceiling as well. I also used a 1/1 tungsten gel to balance with the light in the room. The reason I never really use off-camera strobes for Q shoots is because, usually, they are also video taping the shows for online distribution. They have always-on lights in the studio the turn on selectively  for the video shoots. With five video cameras recording I don’t usually have the time or space to set up my lights. The guy who does the taping, though, is off for the summer so there’s no video recording happening at all. I would’ve used lights for the Tori Amos shoot as well, but I literally only had time to take THREE pictures before I had to leave. With Annie, I had a little more time and got one of my favourite shots I’ve taken in the Q studio yet.

ISO 200, 50mm f/1.8 lens at F/2.2.

I love that she still has her CBC visitor’s pass on.
