Portfolio update

March 26, 2010 | Filed Under news | Leave a Comment

I just updated the Radio/TV section of my portfolio (see the buttons at the top of the page for other sections). The work in this section consists of photography done in and around the CBC, where I work as an associate producer, photographer, project manager and all-around ninja. Notable additions to the portfolio include Tori Amos, Jully Black, Dolores O’Riordan, Old Man Luedecke, Basia Bulat, and Canada Reads 2010 imagery amongst other shots. I post some of my work, as it’s shot, on the blog with additional information as to how I made/got the shot; there should be no such thing as a “trade secret,” as the sharing of knowledge only serves to advance it for everyone, including oneself.

But it didn’t fit, so I took a picture instead.

Passing the torch/Nikolski

March 19, 2010 | Filed Under photo | Leave a Comment

A fun little idea for when Hannah Sung (tweet her) took over the blogging duties for CBC ’s Book Club once the Canada Reads 2010 winner (Nicolas Dickner’s Nikolski) had been decided.  Two light setup: Main is at camera right, an SB600 triggered with CLS and a voice-activated light stand named Lily. On-camera pop-up triggered CLS and provided a teeny bit of fill. The cross light on the left side is the sun. Shot at a F/9 and a 1/80 shutter while panning to capture the sense of motion. Flannery and Hannah were both great sports for this shoot and are continuously a pleasure to work with.

Megs in the park

Think I had two SB600s firing directely at Megs. Bit windy for a shoot-through (and way too bright for small flashes). Love that park area.

Phil DeMont on grey

Got a call, “We need a shot of Phil, he’s only here for another five minutes.” Four minutes later I was on the fourth floor of the CBC improvising a two-light shoot against a grey background near the CBC News area. One SB600 was going off the ceiling, another was bouncing off the wall behind me (both surfaces were white) and they were both triggered with Nikon CLS. Enlarge the pic to see the catch lights.
